hildebrands : family having fun at home

Filed under family • Written by browns @ 2:56 pm

Kobie and Jeff had us to their place for some family portraits, as well as photography of their girls being themselves and having fun. This session was perfect because Kobie had planned activities for her Annika and Sophie that they enjoyed: dressing up in their pretty dresses, dancing to music, riding a rocking horse, jumping on the bed in jammies and having a bubble bath. Not only are the girls absolutely adorable, they were engaged throughout the session and having a blast. Here are a few of our favorites …

careers in the arts : d.w. poppy students visit our studio

Filed under fun stuff • Written by browns @ 12:08 am

careers in the arts photography

We had 20 high school students from D.W. Poppy in Langley, BC come visit us at our studio to hear about careers in the arts. They are at a great point in their lives. There are so many different paths they could take. I do remember the possibilities being overwhelming though. If you were able to give your 17 year old self some guidance, what would you say?

After talking about our journey through music and architecture to reach photography, we took a few pictures of them with The Blue Wall. Here are our favorites …

Thanks for coming to our studio! Feel free to contact us if you have more questions about careers in the arts that you think we might be able to answer. Don’t forget to join our Facebook Group where we’ve posted these pictures for you to tag and use as your profile pic. :-)

We have some portrait session posts up our sleeves … or rather on our hard drives. We are wrapping up our super duper design fest to meet our holiday card deadlines so we’ll post more later this week. Stay tuned for information on courses and workshops we’ll be offering in early 2009. They will make great gifts for the photography enthusiast in your life!

our studio space : where we meet + take pictures

Filed under fun stuff, personal • Written by browns @ 10:30 pm

Our studio space has come together this fall and has simplified our life. Instead having to clean up like a maniac before meeting clients in our living room, we now have a separate space to meet and shoot in. The best part is no one knows if our kitchen is a disaster. Tonight, we finally got a huge piece of Lexi with her piggy tails displayed so we were motivated to take some pictures for those of you who haven’t been in yet …

Jason took these pictures of Lexi the first time she wore piggy tails. She was somberly enthralled with them. These are printed on glossy, metallic paper the middle one is 3 feet by 4 feet. You must come by just to see it!

lego star wars : xander and jason’s first stop motion movie

Filed under personal • Written by Jason @ 4:34 pm

If you’ve met our 5 year old son, Xander, or have followed our blog, you will realize that it is an understatement to simply say that he is passionate about Lego. Today Jason and Xander made their first stop motion Lego movie. Xander came up with the concept and did the voice over. Jason was the technical genius. I’m sure this is the first of many shorts.

photo tips for regular people : print your photos

Filed under fun stuff • Written by browns @ 12:41 am

abbotsford photographer revival arts jason brown darcie

We enjoy doing workshops and educational talks about photography. We’re looking forward to hosting a class from the DW Poppy high school arts program on Tuesday to chat about our career path. When we were in high school Jason aspired to be an architect and I aspired to be a psychologist. 10 years ago we had just bought our first SLR camera out of the buy and sell and were trying to figure out how to load the film correctly. It took 3 tries to get the film roll loaded properly so we could expose it. It took several more tries to figure out that we were supposed to turn the dials until the needle thingy was in the middle.

Anyways … I’ve been thinking it might be of interest for us to post some of the practical tips and ideas we mention in our presentations on our blog. Here goes tip #1.

Print your pictures every month.

With the age of digital photography most of us take tons of pictures and print very few. This creates a couple potential problems.

When your hard drive with all your photos on it bites the dust you will moan and gnash your teeth as you think of all the memories that it has taken with it. Please note it is not *IF* your hard drive fails, it is *WHEN.* If you have your photos backed up on disks and you have physical prints there will be less moaning and gnashing of teeth.

Another potential problem is the rate at which technology is changing. Can you imagine trying to pull all your photos off of a floppy disk? That was 15 years ago. 15 years from now having files on CD or DVD may present a similar problem. If you have a box of printed photos you will still be able to look through them and warmly chuckle at your 2008 hairstyle and clothing.

If you have questions that have to do with photography feel free to post them in the comments and we’ll answer them for you in a future post. If you are looking for someone to speak to a group about photography feel free to contact us. We bring pictures and have never had anyone fall asleep (other than newborns) in one of our talks which we take as a good sign.
